Keep Your Smile Healthy

Retainers at Limbaugh Orthodontics help keep your teeth in their new positions after braces or Invisalign treatment. With the right retainer and consistent wear, you can protect your results and enjoy your healthy smile for years to come.

The Right Retainer for Your Smile

After orthodontic treatment, your teeth need support to stay in their new positions. Retainers help hold your smile in place while your bite and surrounding tissues adjust.

At Limbaugh Orthodontics in Huntsville, Dr. Lindsay Limbaugh offers custom retainers to help protect the time, care, and effort you put into your smile. We’ll explain your options and make sure you know how to wear and care for your retainer.

Essix Retainers

Essix retainers are clear, removable trays that fit closely over your teeth to help maintain your smile after treatment. At Limbaugh Orthodontics, they can be a comfortable, low-profile option for keeping your results in place.

How Essix Retainers Work

Essix retainers are custom-made to match the shape of your teeth. They fully cover your smile, similar to clear aligners, and help prevent teeth from shifting after braces or Invisalign.

Because they are clear and removable, Essix retainers are easy to wear and simple to fit into your routine. Dr. Limbaugh will let you know when to wear your retainer and how to care for it.

Hawley Retainers

Hawley retainers are a classic, reliable way to help your smile stay straight after orthodontic treatment. They are durable, removable, and made to fit your teeth comfortably.

How Hawley Retainers Work

A Hawley retainer uses a custom acrylic piece and a thin metal wire to hold your teeth in place. The acrylic fits against the roof of your mouth or behind your lower teeth, while the wire rests along the front of your smile.

One benefit of Hawley retainers is that they can often be adjusted if small changes are needed. Dr. Limbaugh will check the fit and make sure your retainer continues to support your smile.

In-House Retainers

Custom retainers help protect the smile you worked hard to achieve. When retainers can be made in-house, our team can provide a convenient option designed around your exact smile.

How In-House Retainers Work

In-house retainers are made from digital scans of your teeth, creating a custom fit without traditional impressions. This helps make the process more comfortable and accurate.

Because these retainers are created by the practice, replacing a lost or damaged retainer may be faster and more convenient. That means less time without the support your smile needs to stay in place.

Fixed Retainers

A fixed retainer may be recommended after treatment to help hold certain teeth in place. Unlike removable retainers, this type of retainer stays attached to the back of the teeth.

How Fixed Retainers Work

A fixed retainer is a thin wire bonded to the back of the front teeth, most often on the lower arch. It works quietly in the background to help prevent shifting in an area where teeth commonly move after treatment.

If Dr. Limbaugh recommends a fixed retainer, she may also pair it with a removable retainer for added support. Our team will show you how to clean around it and keep your smile healthy.

Phase 1 Retainers

After Phase 1 treatment, some younger patients need a retainer or appliance to help maintain their progress until they are ready for the next stage of care. This helps protect early treatment results while the child continues to grow.

How Phase 1 Retainers Work

A Phase 1 retainer or appliance is chosen based on your child’s growth, bite, and treatment needs. In some cases, a removable appliance, such as a Twin Block, may be used to support the jaw position while permanent teeth continue to come in.

Dr. Limbaugh will monitor your child’s growth and let you know when it is time for the next step. The goal is to keep early progress on track and prepare the smile for Phase 2 treatment when the timing is right.

How to Care for Your Retainer

Your smile still needs support after braces or Invisalign treatment. Wearing and caring for your retainer properly helps protect your results and keep your teeth from shifting.

Follow these tips to help your retainer last and keep your smile in place:

  • Wear your retainer as instructed by Dr. Limbaugh and our team. You can usually remove it to eat, brush your teeth, swim, or play contact sports.
  • Bring your retainer to follow-up visits so we can check the fit and make sure it is still working properly.
  • Keep your retainer case with you so your retainers stay safe when you’re not wearing them. Always placing them in your case can prevent costly replacements.
  • Call our office if your retainer feels loose, tight, cracked, or broken. A retainer that does not fit correctly may not protect your smile.
  • Let us know right away if you lose your retainer. Teeth can start shifting when they go too long without retention.
  • Clean your retainer once a day with a toothbrush and warm water. Avoid hot water, which can warp the material.
  • Practice speaking, reading, or singing out loud while wearing your retainer if it feels unusual at first. Most patients adjust quickly with regular wear.
  • Keep your retainer away from heat, including hot cars, washing machines, dryers, pockets, and hot water.
  • Handle your retainer with care so it can keep supporting your smile throughout your retention phase.
